The Trip To Success by Jennifer
As he was sitting down in the car feeling the breeze brush over him, he kept thinking, where am I gonna go? Passing through the city of San Luis Potosi gave him a overwhelmed feeling of sadness and despair. He kept thinking about his family that he left back home, a teardrop drops on his hand. Not only was he leaving his family but he was also leaving the place he knew the most. The country was the place he went through good times and bad times along with his family. It also meant he would be leaving his “freedom.”
As he starts to arrive at the house, his sister told him about, he starts to feel scared and upset. Because he much rather stay at his sister’s house, but her husband did not want him to be in the same house as them. As his sister, Julia, pulls up by the house he observes it and how the red paint looked chipped and quite old. The color of the house was as red as an apple and as old as his great grandma. After what seems like 3 minutes a tall, tired, old guy steps out the house. He starts to doubt if he was in good hands because he looked intimidating.
But sure enough the stranger opened his arms to him and gave him a room to stay, food to eat, and a job. That gave him a different perspective of him and soon enough it felt as if he was his second dad. When a week goes by he starts to work at a bakery near the house where the stranger told him about. The bakery was quite the most famous one in the community and he earned a decent amount of money. Years go by and he feels as his life is great! But he soon realizes that his money is running low. He starts to look for jobs but they refuse because of the bad economy they were facing.
Soon enough he reunites with his cousin, Mario, and he feels excited and amused. They go to a restaurant and talk about how life is going so far. His cousin brings up the subject about going to the United States to work and offers him to go along with him. He doubts the decision to go or not to go because that meant he would be leaving Mexico, his homeland! The place where he was born in and raised.
He had to make a decision by the end of the week because they were leaving soon. When he gets home he starts to tell the guy about the subject and they sit down and talk. After what seems like an hour he encourages him to go. So he starts to pack little things such as a few shirts, pants, and a pair of shoes. He didn't pack much because his cousin told him to. As days start to go by he doubts if he should go but then again he thinks about his future and sticks with the plan.
When sunday arrives he gathers his things and looks over it twice to make sure he has everything. After that he goes to the guy and hugs him and exchanges goodbye to the guy. When he goes outside he takes a deep breathe and looks around his surroundings. His eyes start well up, he looks at his hands, and his feet trying not to look up, because he didn’t want to start crying. He didn’t knew if he was coming back to Mexico or not. He holds it in and hops on the car hoping that his cousin did not see him upset. On the trip to the United States he starts to wonder where will I live.? For what seems like a day he finally arrives in Dallas, Texas.
He looked around his surroundings and noticed how different the environment looked. There was big giant trees, green grass, a lot of cars, and a lot of buildings. Back in his home there was a few trees and no grass, most things were dull and dead. The grass was scarce for cows to chew on. And the environment back in his home was poor compared to the environment in The United States.
When his cousin pulls up by a hotel he gives him a key and a phone to use. He observes for a second in his hand and remembers that his cousin taught him how to use a phone. He then proceeds to walk to his room and starts to turn the cold, old nob. When he gets inside he looks around the room. There was only a bed, a counter, and a television. He then begins to settle down, unpack, and take a long hot shower to ease his nerves. After that he goes to bed, pulls the covers over him, and thinks to himself. After thinking about work the next day he starts to fall asleep.
He immediately wakes up because of the alarm he had put the day before. It was five in the morning and he was getting ready to go to work. He puts on some work pants, boots, a hat, and two shirts. After that he goes outside to wait for his cousin when he arrives he gets in the car and they drive to the field. Working in the field picking blueberries was not hard for him. But then again he would get burnt from the sun and have back problems.
After a month of working in the field he came to realize that what he was making was not enough. And work had been only like 3 days a week because there was just a few things to do. So he and his cousin left Dallas, Texas to go up north to work. His cousin had heard that up north was more jobs with good pay. So they gathered up their things and continued on the road again.
On the way there his cousin told him about how somebody needed workers to pick cherries in Traverse city. It took about a day or so to get to Grand rapids. But they each took turns driving the truck. So neither of them were exhausted. When they arrived in Grand rapids, Michigan they stayed at a friends house. They were planning on going back in forth to Traverse City and Grand Rapids.
The next day they spent about 3 hours to get to Traverse city and they immediately started working. Every day at 5 in the morning they would go to the farm. They would grab a bucket and start to work. Despite the hard work he managed to work enough to buy a house in Grand Rapids.
Settling in Grand Rapids was a huge deal. After 4 years of living there, he went back to Mexico and brought his wife Paula. Whom he started a family with. They had planned to stay in United states because of violence in Mexico. And started their life little by little. Yeah there were struggle here and there but life was good and this was the american dream.

The US Navy made by Elias
Douglas grew up with a carefree and fun life, his dad owned a feed mill which was powered by the river with a giant wooden wheel. He and the boys would always enjoy climbing around looking at the gears and how it all worked. In 1957 they moved to NE Ohio in a cottage on lake Erie before it was badly polluted. He worked mowing lawns getting paid 50 cent an hour and bought his first truck a ‘54 Chevy for a whole fifty dollars! cheap right? Later in life Douglas and his 3 work partners worked on a cattle ranch. While there they were herding the cattle when they got scattered all over in the swamp. They spent all day gathering the herd and the Foreman wasn't very happy to say the least. In the end they took their money and went on a vacation to the Bahamas the summer of ’66. Where they stayed on Grand Bahama Island when UNCLE SAM called and three of them were drafted and one got married. They raced back to their home-state, Ohio. One of them was drafted into the army and while Douglas was waiting for his number to be called he decided to join the Navy because of a lower risk job. He didn't want to have to kill anyone or be killed. He then found out his number was 185 which means he would end up in the army, right in the middle of the war. While in the navy he traveled all over. And was on a few different ships, a destroyer named the USS Barry DD 932 out of Key West Florida, and the USNS Kane T-AGS 27 a research ship very similar to the Pueblo out of Alaska. Since Russia was a big deal to worry about, His job was to track enemy submarines all around the world using sonar. At that time it was very top secret information. That information was very valuable to the U.S because it allowed them to track the enemy’s every move… Something the enemy didn’t like very much. Later during his service, a ship named the Pueblo was attacked on January 23rd, 1968. The crew members were captured and held prisoners and tortured for eleven months. At the time that was a huge concern for Douglas and everyone else on the very similar ship, for fear that they would be next. Luckily their ship was not attacked or threatened during his deployment. Douglas said, “I never dodged the service and considered it an honor to serve this great country. I would do it again in a heartbeat.”After his deployment he settled down got married . And had two kids Petula (1969) and Scott (1971) with his wife of now 50 years of marriage. One of the greatest changes in his life is communication Douglas said
‘‘Greatest invention is probably the computer and internet thank you Al Gore’’
when he was a kid there only phone was a box on the wall that was and eight line party so the neighbors could listen to their calls. But no we have smart phones and computers to communicate with. Douglas now lives in Northport Florida, our families enjoy taking trips to see them!
